Care

Q.: I have taken in a cat that has fleas, however, the fur on its back is stuck together and appears to be tender underneath. It also appears to be painful.
What can I do to help this sweet cat? Can I give a cat a bath?

A.: It is possible to give a cat a bath, but I think you should consult a vet about it. If the skin underneath the fur is sore and painful, it is likely that it is too delicate for ordinary shampoos.
The vet may want to cut down the fur for further examination, and this will probably make some kind of sedation or anesthesia necessary.
It is possible that the cat suffers from allergy to flea saliva, which could account for the sore skin.
