Q.: Well I've had Mocha for more than eight months and I got her from the shelter and my roommate brought home today a three-year-old neutered male from the shelter, and she doesn't seem to get along with him. When he gets near her, she starts hissing at him and tries to claw him, when he gets too near - but he just wants to get close to her and smell her I assume and they both stare at each other; her ears are back and when they try to move from each other they do it very slowly. How can I get these two cats to get along cause I don't want to make my roommate get rid of her cat. I don't get it she gets along good with other roommate's dog.
A.: I don't think you need to worry. The behavior you describe is quite normal for two adult cats that have just met. Actually their reactions to each other are on the mild side.
Contrary to what most people think, it is much harder for two cats to make friends than it is for a cat and a dog, probably because in the wild, cats and dogs would not compete for the same kind of prey.
Also the ranking system among cats is much more complicated than it is among dogs.
Therefore one should expect a longer period of "adjustment" and "rubbing off corners" between two cats.
This is why your cat gets along much better with the other roommate's dog.
I think you'll see improvement of the cats' relationship within the next two weeks, otherwise write me again.
