Questions and Answers

Pregnancy, Birth, and Kittens

Q.: This past weekend I found a cat in my garage, no collar or anything, we have taken her in as our own pet. Now she has been sleeping under my bed and by the heater. I'm not sure how old she is, and I'm not sure if she is neutered.
I would just like to know if she is pregnant? What are the early signs of a pregnant cat? Do they have nipples if they are female, or only if they are pregnant?

A.: All cats have nipples, even males. But in a pregnant cat they will be more prominent, and the color will be more red than usual. These signs can be seen from app. the third week of pregnancy.
Another sign is that the cat does not go into heat as usually, i.e. after an interval of 8-10 days. Later, the cat will start eating more than usual, and from the fourth to fifth week, the cat will start to grow visibly. But the only way you can be absolutely certain is to have a vet take a look at the cat.
