Bad Litterbox Habits

Q.: We have two cats, both male, they have been indoor cats since we got them (approximately five years ago). Well, they have been making lots of messes lately and we want to make them outdoor cats and fix a place for them in the garage, they both are declawed in the front paws only. Will this work or am I dreaming. They are ruining our carpet!

A.: Before you do something drastic, I think you should let a vet check the cats to make sure there's not a physical illness causing this problem.
You may try to spray the "criminal places" with Feliway in order to persuade them to stick to their litter trays.
But since the problem has arisen lately - and I interpret your letter to the effect that the cats have otherwise been "behaving" in all the five years you've had them, I would suspect some kind of disease to be behind this - unless there is a sudden change in your environment and/or lives that could account for this?
