Bad Litterbox Habits

Q.: I have a 13 year-old cat that I adopted about a month ago because her owner died. For the past two mornings in a row, I'm waking up to find urine on the floor just outside the litter box.
I keep it very clean for her and I'm not sure why this is just now happening when it did not happen when I first got her.

A.: In an elderly cat one should always suspect a medical condition to be behind sudden bad litter box habits.
The vet should check for cystitis, kidney problems etc.
