Questions and Answers

Pregnancy, Birth, and Kittens

Q.: I'm not sure, but I think my cat is pregnant. She has also started leaving droppings around the house - is there any chance there could be a connection?
Do pregnant cats do these things? Also, how can I tell if she is pregnant? She seems to be getting fatter and her nipples are getting more pronounced. They are a pinkish/reddish color.
When I touch her stomach (lower down) I can feel some lumps, and I don't know if that would be babies, or perhaps something else (which is my fear).

A.:  I think your cat is pregnant. Larger, redder nipples combined with a growing stomach are classical signs.
The lumps you can feel may well be the kittens. If they were "something else", and they were so large you could feel them, your cat would have shown other signs of severe illness.
Although the most common digestion problem in pregnant cats is indigestion, the droppings she leaves around the house may be caused by her pregnancy - maybe simply because her size slows her down, so she doesn't get to the litter box in time.
