Q.: My cat was a stray that I took in over 5 years ago. Four months ago, we moved into a new house. Since then, she poops up against the baseboard of our living room wall almost daily.
We tried moving her litter box from the bathroom to the living room opposite from where she is pooping so that it was out of the way but she is still doing it.
I am wondering how to stop it and if she may be failing mentally, so that she does not realize that she is in the wrong place. She never does it in the middle of the room, always against the wall.
A.: I'd rather place the box in the exact place where she does it, then, if she gets the drift, try slowly moving the box back towards the bathroom by a few inches a day.
She may be a bit nervous about her new surroundings and wanting to poop with you around to feel safe.
Both cats and humans find it harder to adapt to new surroundings and new situations as we get older. It is therefore likely that she just needs longer time to adjust than a younger cat would.
But I would also consider having her checked by a vet to rule out the possibility of a medical reason.
