Pregnancy, Birth, and Kittens

Q.: We have "adopted" a cat from a playground with animals in our community. She is pregnant and is due in 1-2 weeks. She is very cuddly, but also very cautious.
Apart from that we have also taking in a male cat from a cat rescue. He is 8-10 months old and will be neutered in a few days. He is cuddly, but he doesn't seem to be so happy about the female. She, on the other hand, wants to make friends with him, but this is not being accepted very well - he hisses and strikes after her. He almost sneaks past her, and she now seems a little afraid of him. What can we do???
What will happen after she has her kittens?? Should we keep him away from her or what???

A.: The hissing and striking and shunning each other is quite normal for two adult cats who are about to get to know each other. Actually it doesn't sound that bad.
The question is, however, how safe she will feel with a male around, once she has had her kittens. He may smell and act like a whole male for up to a month after being neutered.
If it is possible for you to install her in a separate room, where she can have her kittens and be in peace with them, I think that would be the best. Then of course you will have to be in there a lot in order to make the kittens used to people.
Later, when the kittens are 7-8 weeks, you may try to see if it works out between them all.
