Sex Life and Life After That

Q.: I have an eight-year-old female cat who has been an indoor cat most of her life, she hasn't had kittens and she has been on oral contraceptives. Now I have the possibility of letting her out and I'd like to have her neutered.
So I'm wondering if you think there may be complications since she is this old? It would be better for her, I assume? The pills can't be good for a cat for a lengthy time period, can they?

A.: There will always be a certain risk in general anesthesia, and it will be a bit higher for an elderly cat.
But the risk involved in letting her continue on contraceptive pills will be at least as high. Prolonged use of contraceptives my lead to quite a few serious diseases such as painful cysts of the ovaries, cancer of the teats etc. So I think that neutering will be best.
