Q.: I live in an two-bedroom apartment with three cats. The apartment now is due for rebuilding, and the cats and I have to move out in the meantime. The problem is that the cats are absolutely terrified of transportation. They are all rescue cats with each their individual quirks and minor neuroses. I have chosen a vet as near my home as possible, for example, for each time the need to be transported, it means prolonged, moaning howls (and I mean HOWLS), quivering, damp paws etc.. Not to mention how difficult it is to get them into their carriers. They are simply terrified, and I hate it as much as the do - I'm soaked with sweat afterwards! And now we must go for an hour of car ride to live with my boyfriend for ten days. They've never tried a ride that long before.
I dread it. Isn't it possible to give them a light anesthesia, e.g. a small dose of sedative or something like that? You mention car sickness medication in another answer, but would that be enough since they are so scared? Or should I just let them "suffer" and wear ear plugs? I really hope you can help me - it's less then two weeks from now.
A.: Medication for car sickness has some sedative effect. But judging from your description it's hardly enough. I think you should call your vet, describe the situation, and get a prescription. There will be a remedy that can help.
