Q.: My cat will lick me very affectionately then all of a sudden bite me.
Can you explain what this behavior means.

A.: There are two possible explanations to this behavior, depending on how violent the biting is. A gentle chewing will be derived from the cat's own fur care, which apart from licking also may involve chewing in order to soften up the fur.
A more sudden, determined bite may mean the cat is becoming over-excited by the situation. In both cases it may help to take a break from petting the cat. It won't help to scold - the cat simply won't understand why.
