Bad Litterbox Habits

Q.: I have two cats. One of the cats has started urinating all over our new house. At first it was just small concentrated amounts around the baseboards. SO I thought he was trying to mark his territory. He is still doing that and is urinating large amounts on the hardwood in the kitchen.
He has had urinary tract problems in the past, so I am consulting my vet, but is there anyway I can discourage him from urinating outside of the litter box and encourage him to go in the litter box?

A.: You may be right in your suspicion that the cat is trying to mark the new territory - that is if the vet is able to rule out physical illness.
In that case, you should perhaps try to "persuade him" into marking in more harmless ways. This can be done by applying a remedy called Feliway to the spots he is marking. I don't know about your country, but here in Denmark this remedy is only available at the vet's.
It works by smelling like the hormones cats deposit by rubbing their cheeks against objects. It was originally designed to prevent unneutered males from spraying their surroundings, but has proved efficient in other cases of unwanted marking as well. It can also be used to relieve tension and stress among cats, since these hormones have a sedative effect on cats.
If this doesn't work, you're welcome to write again, if possible with information on anything - apart from moving into a new house - that might have happened in your life to perhaps make the cat feel insecure.
