Q.: My cat Smokey like to put her dry food in her water dish. I give her wet food as well as the dry food. Is this okay behavior or is she trying to tell me something?
A.: This behavior is not unheard of. I also now and then find bits of dry food in the water bowls (where they quickly swell to double size) around the house, even though it is obvious to me, that my cats eat their dry food with great delight.
There are as many different theories on this as there are cat people in the world.
One says that it simply happens accidentally: the cat goes from the food bowl to the water dish still chewing, and a dry food bit falls out into the water.
Another theory is that it's an old instinct that tells the cat to store food this way. I don't think this is probable; most manufacturers of food - both for humans and animals - will tell you that water is definitely not good for preserving food.
So personally, I tend to back up the "accidental" theory, but in both cases, the bottom-line is: It's OK, and she is probably not trying to tell you anything. It only means you have to change the water often so it doesn't get too messy.
