Q.: My step dad has a new cat and he doesn't want it any more so my mom and I are taking it. Sammy our cat is very hyper and we don't know how they will react. They are both neutered. So what should we expect?
A.: Well a lot of hissing, growling and even slapping in the face should be expected. This is normal in the beginning of any cat relationship. You should also expect the period of adjustment between the two of them to be rather long, maybe even months.
Getting to know each other is always a much more complicated process for cats than for example for dogs.
This means you shouldn't lose courage too soon nor be alarmed if the atmosphere is full of hissing etc. for some time.
The "old" cat (in this case Sammy) is always the one to feel more vulnerable in this process than the new one. This is why you should offer him extra attention and affection, even if he may reject you at times in resentment.
In most cases, however, this eventually works out fine, especially if the humans involved remain calm in spite of the hissing and growling. The cats may never become close friends, but they will almost always get to accept each other's presence.
