Other Behavior Issues

Q.: I picked up my male neuter at a cat shelter on March, 13th 2002. At the shelter he was used to dried food (Hill's) which is out all day, since I work from 8-15:30.
He likes Whiskas very much - is there anything to say against giving him that in the evening? I feel he is more saturated and content.
How can I discourage him from tearing along at 4:30 am?
He hasn't been out in the garden yet, and I dread the first time - might he run away? I should add that we're great friends, he is very loving and devoted.

A.: There's nothing wrong in feeding him Whiskas once in a while, but it's better for him to live off Hill's as his basic food and then have some Whiskas as "candy" a couple of times a week.
As for tearing along in the morning it is possible it stops once he has settled in. . .
If you want him to go out and at the same time feel safe about it, the best would be to build him an enclosure. But if you want him to go freely in the garden, then you should go with him the first times, maybe even carrying him in your arms.
Keep going with him till you can tell by his body language (high tail etc.) that he feels safe about the garden and is familiar with it.
The highest risk of him running away is in the beginning because he may panic over all the strange sounds and smells. Later there shouldn't be any reason for him to run away since he is neutered.
Congratulations on your new kitty!
